Chris Gibson

Chichester-based graphic artist Christopher Gibson initially studied fine art at Worthing Art College in the late 80s before specialising in graphic design at the London College of Printing and Typography at Brighton University. He has exhibited pastel and watercolour works in the past but it was a love of the classic travel posters of the early 20th Century that has inspired this series of vintage prints of the Chichester area. Christopher works as a freelance graphic designer in publishing and he has illustrated many book covers in the same vintage style. Christopher is a huge fan of classic travel posters from the 1920s and 30s which he loves for their use of flat colour, strong shadows and almost abstracted shapes, best represented by artists such as Edward McKnight Kauffer and Verney L Danvers, both of whom created designs for London Underground. In the past the artist would have produced an original design by hand which would then be reworked by the printer for the lithographic printing process. Christopher is able to utilize the latest computer technology in the production of his designs. This gives him a lot more flexibility when designing the composition and also is not limited by the number of colours he can economically use.
